NEW Laundry Basket Liners, Handcrafted by Women in the UK
One of the (many) very special things about our baskets is how versatile they are, and our Ghanaian log baskets are no exception. These tall, open baskets also make perfect laundry baskets – so last year we decided to have some cotton basket liners manufactured so that we could sell these baskets as one or the other – or both!

Our new calico cotton liners can be purchased as an add-on when you buy one of our Ghanaian Log or Laundry Baskets. These liners sit inside the basket and are secured by two simple ties either side of the basket handles.
In bringing in an additional, optional element to these baskets, we were mindful – as ever - to work with an organisation that is doing positive things socially and environmentally. Holly did some research and came across a social enterprise called Fabric Works, based in East London, UK. Being a small textile design and production group that creates training opportunities and routes to sustainable employment for local women, we were extremely keen to work with them.

Five women worked on our first order of cotton laundry basket liners, from their studio at Limehouse Town Hall, Tower Hamlets. Here, Fabric Works has created a welcoming space for local long-term unemployed women to meet, to learn, and to create.

Here women can access free machining, hand sewing and garment production classes, one-to-one support, work experience and volunteering opportunities, and CV building sessions, as well as commission-based work, paid in line with the London Living Wage.

As well as The Basket Room, Fabric Works has partnered with ethical fashion houses Birdsong, Markus Lupfer and AKThreads, and many smaller, start-up brands - making garments, homeware, soft furnishings, accessories and toys. Twenty of their team finished their biggest commission to date last Christmas: 1800 wheat wellness bags for Toast.

The enterprise has also just launched a new repair and alterations service, giving old clothes and textiles a new lease of life.
