We’re delighted to announce the arrival of HUNTUMA, our ethically hand woven Moses basket made by our partner co-operative in Northern Ghana.
This beautiful baby bassinet makes the perfect ethical baby gift and features striking black stripes and tribal-inspired blocks on a natural sisal base. Its matching black carry handles come in buttery-soft and sustainably-sourced goat’s leather. The weavers who produce these Moses baskets – mainly women - typically learn their craft from mothers and grandmothers, passing the skill along the female bloodline. Agricultural work is the mainstay of most weavers’ family incomes, but poor rainfall and drought makes life extremely challenging. Basket weaving, and producing these exquisite woven Moses baskets, brings women the opportunity to earn a valuable second income.
Each Moses basket takes around three days to weave, using veta vera grass (also known as ‘elephant grass’) which grows wild in Ghana and is remarkably sturdy when woven. Supplied with a quilted hypoallergenic foam mattress with a washable cover, these Ghanaian moses baskets are the perfect napping space for new arrivals.
