Our lilac and white ZAMBARAU collection of colourful woven baskets evoke images of pale clouds hurrying across a twilight Kenyan sky, and come in five different sizes. Hand woven from sisal grass by a member of one of four rural women's weaving cooperatives in South Western Kenya, our smaller baskets are perfect used as planters and flower pots for all manner of succulents, cacti and other indoor plants. Larger sizes are stylish storage baskets for toys, jewellery, desk stationery and bathroom products.
The craftswomen who produce these ZAMBARAU woven baskets work within a large weaving cooperative, benefitting from fairly-paid work and the flexible workloads that basket weaving can offer. The Basket Room works with these weaving groups because of their particular skills in weaving repeat patterns using a traditional method of twining. These groups meet weekly to discuss new orders, to deliver completed orders and to receive their wages. Kenyan sisal grass is purchased ready-rolled once we place our orders with these weaving cooperatives, and it is then hand-dyed in large vats before being hung to dry.
Weaving takes place largely during the dry seasons, since most weavers are subsistence farmers who need an alternative means of income when crop production becomes scarce. To take home one of our woven baskets is to support us in empowering women: to provide for themselves and their families and to overcome barriers. Each woven basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative who made yours. Want to meet the women behind your basket? You can meet the weavers HERE.
