This intricate white open-weave shopper bag is the perfect beach bag or market-day tote, hand woven in the Eastern Region of Kenya.
One of just 45 skilled women in the weaving cooperative produced this hand woven bag. Made from Kenyan sisal grass, preparing the sisal alone is a lengthy job, and all done by hand. The plant’s leaves are harvested and then split, then hand-rolled and dyed in boiling water before being hung to dry. Only then can the detailed weaving process begin.
To take home of our hand-woven baskets is to become an important part of our story. Basket weaving has become a valuable extra source of income to cooperative weavers, helping women from farming communities to support their families with extra reliable income during the unpredictable dry seasons. Each shopper bag comes with a thank you card from the cooperative that wove yours. You can meet the weavers HERE.
