This bold, monochrome WAO basket has been woven by one of a group of female weavers living in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda.
Deep and sturdy and woven from raffia and banana leaf stem in a black and white chevron design, WAO would make an impressive floor basket. This woven treasure would look equally arresting in a hallway as a place to keep shoes, bags and scarves.
Some of the women in this weaving group were left widowed after the Allied Democratic Forces war of the 90’s, and others were left homeless. In 2003 they found that the traditional handicraft of basket weaving was the best way of earning a living, and now the founding group of six women numbers over one hundred weavers.
Weaving baskets empowers these women. Through the sales of these woven baskets, their children can access a better education. In bringing a wage home for the first time, women achieve greater autonomy in home life.
