Introducing TUMU: a beautifully hand woven bicycle basket with red and green patterns bringing a Ghanaian pop of colour. A unique and stylish bike accessory, designed in-house by The Basket Room.
Pack your front basket with books and a blanket for a day out exploring the countryside, or use it for carrying your trainers, kit and bottle to the gym. Our woven bicycle baskets also fasten to banisters for tidying away nick nacks, and can be fastened to bathroom and cot rails for keeping towels, toiletries, books and toys in one place. Woven by our partner weaving cooperative in Northern Ghana from an indigenous crop known colloquially as ‘elephant grass’, each bike basket takes around three days to weave once the grass is split, rolled by hand, and then dyed in boiling water.
Our bicycle baskets each tell an important story about collaboration and sustainable living. To become an owner of one of our woven baskets is to become a part of our journey, directly supporting the weavers in becoming less dependent on the unpredictable nature of self-sufficiency farming.
Each bicycle basket comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
