We’re delighted to present our black and sisal handwoven basket bag, in collaboration with Jigsaw. A stylish summer tote bag for gym trips and market shopping, this geometric bag is 100% Kenyan and skilfully hand woven.
Each basket bag takes a weaver up to six days to complete, and weaving is completed around domestic chores and agricultural work, since most weavers in this cooperative are from farming communities. Leather work is completed locally at a leading tannery whose aim is to promote locally sourced materials and to champion the art of leatherwork in Kenya.
Basket weaving has become an empowering means of additional income for the weavers, whose revenue from crops can be unpredictable at best. Producing these woven baskets enables these women (as most weavers are ladies) to maintain their roles as housewives, mothers and farmers whilst raising extra essential funds for things like school fees and clothes. Most importantly, working within a cooperative ensures that each weaver is paid a fair wage.
When you take home a woven basket bag you’re not only supporting these weavers to better support their own families, you are also helping to pave the way for a more ethical working world.
Each bag comes with a thank you card from the cooperative who made your bag. Meet the weavers HERE.
