Dress your breakfast table in fair trade style with the stunning TABASAMU woven bread basket. Boasting a blue and pink patterned stripe against a natural undyed base, this fair trade basket positively bursts with Kenyan colour and ethical vibes.
If you like what you see, snap TABASAMU up now, because there’s only one of them! This woven bread basket is truly one-of-a-kind, woven by a female weaver working in an extremely skilled cooperative in Kenya’s Coastal Region. So creative is this group of weavers that we leave the designs process to them, giving them free rein with colours and patterns. Sisal grass is hand stripped using wooden tools and bare feet, and then it is hand rolled on the thighs before being dyed in vats of boiling water.
Farming communities struggle produce enough harvest to meet their family’s basic needs consistently throughout the year. Weaving these bread baskets as part of a cooperative enables these craftswomen to earn a fair and flexible second income during dry seasons. Each unique woven basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative who made yours - meet the weavers from this region HERE.
