This stunning charcoal and natural cloud laundry basket took six days to complete.
Produced by only the most skilled members of the women’s weaving cooperatives in the rural Eastern Region of Kenya, our laundry hampers are hand woven from indigenous sisal grass. The leaves of this fibrous plant were traditionally used for producing rope and twine, and are rolled and dyed by hand before being carefully woven into a soft, pliable clothes basket for the home. Every laundry hamper takes forty balls of sisal to make, and two leather workers (known locally as ‘fundi’) produce the trim and handles.
Sturdy enough for keeping logs and kindling by the wood burner and pretty enough for nursery storage, whichever way you use your woven laundry basket it is sure to make a statement in your home.
To own one of our woven laundry baskets is to become a vital part of our journey. We are proud to help provide an alternative means of income – basket weaving - to farming communities whose primary source of revenue is inconsistent and heavily reliant on rainfall.
Each laundry basket comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
