Boasting chic black and white stripes the MAKINI laundry bin is a stylish addition to the home.
Produced by one of the most skilled members of the women’s weaving cooperatives in the rural Eastern Region of Kenya, this unique laundry hamper is hand woven from local sisal. The leaves of this indigenous grass are often used for producing rope and twine, and undergo a lengthy process of harvesting, rolling and dyeing - all by hand - before being carefully woven into a beautifully supple laundry basket for use all over the home. Each laundry basket takes forty balls of sisal to weave and six days to complete, whilst two skilled leather workers (known locally as ‘fundi’) produce the trim and handles.
Sturdy enough for fireside log storage and soft enough to be used in bedrooms and bathrooms, wherever you place your woven laundry basket it is sure to bring a Kenyan pop of colour to your interior.
To purchase one our woven laundry baskets is to become a vital part of our journey: a rich story of sustainability and craftsmanship. Basket weaving has become a source of alternative income for farming communities during the dry seasons, helping families meet basic living costs.
