Meet vibrant PATIKANA: a sisal and yarn bag hand woven by the Kamba tribe in Kenya. The geometric shapes in blue, red, black and white create a distinctly tribal effect on this boho-inspired basket bag.

These intricate and colourful woven yarn bags are known traditionally as Kiondos (kee-yon/-doh) and were originally made in rural Kenyan communities by mothers as wedding gifts to their daughters. Weaving this particular type of basket bag was until recently a dying art: in 2004 only four elders from the weaving group had the skills make Kiondos, but today there are fifty active members reviving this most intricate art, and more young women keen to learn the skill passed down to them from their grandmothers.

The twining method is a process performed with two woollen elements bound around a central ‘stake’ of local sisal twine. The wool used to weave the exquisite patterns into these colourful bags comes from upcycled jumpers and synthetic yarns, and the bags are then finished in a local leather works with supple cow hide straps for carrying. The weaving alone takes up to six days to finish.

To own one of our wool bags is to become an important part of our journey: a beautiful story of sustainability and craftsmanship. We are proud to support the weavers in a truly fair trade, providing a sustainable source of income for farming communities whose primary income can be unreliable. Use yours for trips to the beach, the gym and the shops, or why not keep this beautiful tradition alive and give a basket bag as a unique wedding gift?

Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
