Deep midnight black on pure white dyed sisal makes the NYEUSI collection of blocked colour baskets a popular choice for those who love monochrome style. Hand woven by a small rural weaving cooperative in South Western Kenya, these woven baskets come in three different sizes and can be used all over the home as fruit baskets and desk tidies, large planters and flower pots. However you choose to use these fabulous storage baskets they are sure to bring a splash of style to any corner of the home. Need more inspo? Check out our basket uses page HERE.
These storage baskets are hand made by a small Kenyan weaving cooperative of around forty ladies who have practised the art of basket weaving from a young age, having been taught the craft by their own mothers and grandmothers. Sisal grass is sourced ready-rolled when regular orders come in from The Basket Room, and the sisal is hand-dyed under the supervision of the cooperative’s dye manager in large vats of boiling water. Finally, the grass is hung out to dry before the twining and weaving begins.
Buying our woven baskets empowers women. Devoted as we are to the progress of fair trade, our work with cooperatives helps the weavers to support themselves and their families through flexible and fairly-paid work options. Most weavers in this group are primarily subsistence farmers, but in the dry seasons this way of life can fail to meet the family’s most basic needs. Each woven basket comes with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative, and you can meet the weavers HERE.
