The NYEKUNDU has been created using a very close weave, involving a tightly coiled wrap over the core element, stitching each new turn tightly to its previous turn to create an extremely robust, spiralling effect. Ideal size for your indoor cacti and succulents.
These stylish palm baskets are woven from doum palm leaves and sisal by the Ngurunit Weavers Group, people of the Samburu and Rendille tribes, based in Northern Kenya. Milk is a way of life for this community and these woven baskets were traditionally created as vessels for collecting camel milk. The NYEKUNDU baskets blend the durability of Rendille weaving with a flavour of Samburu embellishment - their smattering of fine beading forms a double band of red near the lip of each basket.
Although extremely robust, this type of woven basket has become very rare as plastic and metal jugs have taken their place for collecting animal milk. In fact, the Rendille weaving style was virtually a forgotten art before it was revived in 2001 when it became clear that there was a place for these functional yet aesthetic baskets in the market place.
You become a patron of this rare art form when you purchase one of our palm leaf baskets. What’s more, you also become an important part of our journey to support these talented weavers through fair trade. Each basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative – and you can meet the ladies behind your basket HERE.
