This stunning palm leaf basket was made by a member of the Ngurunit Weavers Group, a cooperative of female weavers living in rural Northern Kenya. Woven from doum palm leaf with a ridge of wild sisal and decorated with colourful glass beads, HILA is a beautiful mixture of traditional Rendille weaving style and intricate Samburu beading in white and red.
The Ariaal people of Ngurunit – people of the Samburu and Rendille tribes - herd camels, goats, cattle and sheep, and these beaded baskets follow the design patterns of the doum palm leaf baskets woven traditionally to collect camel milk. Although extremely robust in design, this type of woven basket has become outmoded as plastic and metal containers have taken their place, and the Rendille weaving style had become all but a lost art before it saw a revival in 2001 as these baskets became developed and sold as a decorative and functional home accessory.
These extremely durable woven baskets make stunning fruit bowls and baskets for jewellery and knick knacks, flower pots, planters and desk tidies. The traditional Rendille style is a very close-fitting weave, involving a tightly coiled wrap over the core element, stitching each new turn tightly to its previous turn to create an extremely robust, spiralling effect.
You become a sponsor of this rare craft when you bring home one of our palm leaf baskets – and you also become an important part of our journey to support Kenyan weavers through fair trade. Our basket orders provide flexible and fairly paid work for the Ngurunit weavers. Each basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative – and you can meet the ladies behind your basket HERE.
