Bring some ethical style to the table (or sideboard, bedside table or coffee table) with a beautiful NKOSI woven tray, carefully hand woven from local palm leaf and creeping vines in the Zambezi Valley region of Zambia. Use yours to display drinks coasters, candles and pretty vases of flowers, or load yours with little bowls of canapes, drinks and napkins to pass around at your next soiree.
When the Kariba Dam on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe was built in the 1970’s many of the Tonga people living around it were displaced. The government and other parties set about to support these resettled people, offering training in traditional and profitable crafts such as basket weaving, blacksmithing and woodwork. These woven trays - which are based on the traditional Sinazeze basket - are produced through this flourishing initiative, which seeks to empower the Tonga people through handicrafts and trade.
The organisation we purchase these crafts through ensures that the weavers have the materials and the ongoing training to produce these trays, among other woven pieces for the home (you can meet the Zambian weavers and see what else they produce here) and ensure that fair prices are paid for the weavers’ work. Basket weaving is a way of life in these communities; there is even a club at the local school dedicated to teaching youngsters this vital skill.
