Bring some ethical style to a corner of any room in the home with a NDIO woven basket. Meticulously hand woven from doum palm leaf, these baskets made ideal planters or wastepaper bins, and come in three sizes.
These stylish and practical baskets have travelled from the shores of Lake Turkana in North Western Kenya, on a journey of truly ethical production. This region is part of the renowned ‘Cradle of Mankind’, where some of the earliest evidence of human evolution has been found. It’s also an area notorious for its crippling drought, which this arid land and its people have endured since the eighties. To purchase a NDIO basket you support a sustainable business model and the growth of the developing Turkana economy.
In 1992, a Catholic charity initiated a basketry project in Turkana, to help start to integrate this somewhat sidelined corner of Kenya with the wider economy. Today, 300 women from six villages along Lake Turkana weave baskets here as a means of income, mostly taught the craft by their own mothers and grandmothers. Meet the weavers here.
