Description

Introduce some ethical style to the table - or sideboard, bedside table or coffee table - with a beautiful MUTINTA woven oval tray, carefully crafted from local palm leaf and creeping vines in the Sinazongwe region of Zambia. Each piece in this very small collection is slightly different, with sections of weave in deeper tones achieved through plant-based dyes. Style yours with bowls of fruit, coasters, candles or vases of flowers – or pass around at your next gathering loaded with tasty treats, cutlery and napkins.

When the Kariba Dam on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe was built in the 1970’s many of the Tonga people living around it were displaced in the process. The government and other parties set about to support these resettled people, offering training in traditional and profitable crafts such as basket weaving, blacksmithing and woodwork. These woven trays are produced through this flourishing initiative, which has expanded to produce a wide range of beautiful, traditional handicrafts - you can meet the Zambian weavers and see what else they produce here

The organisation we buy these crafts through seeks to support the Tonga people in achieving economic empowerment. They provide the weavers with the materials and the ongoing training needed to keep producing their work to a very high standard, and they ensure that fair prices are paid for the weavers’ work. Basket weaving is a way of life in these communities; there is even a club at the local school dedicated to teaching youngsters this vital skill.
