Traditional form meets contemporary function in these Zambian handwoven trays which are based on the traditional Sinazeze basket and carefully hand woven from local palm leaf and creeping vines. MUNYA will look gorgeous on coffee tables, bedside tables and sideboards, bringing earthy tones, organic forms and natural textures to any space. Use yours to display coasters, candles and vases of flowers, or load yours with little bowls of tasty treats to pass around at your next lunch or dinner party.
When the Kariba Dam on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe was built in the 1970’s many of the Tonga people living in the region were displaced in the process. As a way to support these resettled communities and preserve their cultural heritage, the government and other parties set up programs offering training in sustainable and traditional crafts such as basket weaving, blacksmithing and woodwork. These woven trays (and wall baskets, placemats and decorative baskets – you can meet the weavers and see more of their work here) are produced through this thriving Zambian initiative, which empowers the Tonga people through craft and trade.
The organisation we buy these pieces through ensure that the weavers have all the materials and the ongoing training to produce these trays to an exceptionally high standard, and work to ensure that fair prices are always paid for the weavers’ work. Basket weaving is a way of life in these Tonga communities; there is even a club at the local school dedicated to teaching youngsters this sustainable craft.
