Love what you see? Add MTUKUTU to your cart now, because we’ve only got one of it! The MTUKUTU is truly one-of-a-kind: a grey, green and maroon patterned storage basket that’s perfect for tidying, organizing and bringing a gorgeous splash of Kenyan colour to the home.
This one-off piece was hand-woven and hand-dyed in rural Kenya from hand-stripped, hand-rolled sisal grass. Its maker? An extremely talented craftswoman working within a weaving cooperative in Kenya’s rural Coastal Region. These creative and skilful groups produce unique woven baskets using their own personal designs, choosing the patterns, the shapes and the colourways that best showcase their skills. Sisal grass is hand stripped using wooden tools and bare feet, and then it is hand rolled on the thighs before being hand dyed in vats of boiling water – this is slow, ethical and fair trade homeware.
The MTUKUTU makes a stunning fruit bowl and can be used on dressing tables for tidying away scarves, jewellery and toiletries. Pop yours in the bathroom for storing loo rolls, or by the fireplace for keeping newspaper and kindling together. The possibilities are endless, but for more basket inspiration, see our uses page HERE.
Basket weaving is a dynamic, income-generating craft form, and you support this empowering trade when you choose one of our woven storage baskets. With crops suffering in the dry season and droughts lengthening, basket weaving helps women make up the financial shortfall, and more. Working as part of a cooperative, these craftswomen are paid a fair wage for their baskets and enjoy the benefits of flexible and portable work, since basket-weaving can be taken everywhere! Each basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative who made yours - meet the weavers HERE.
