Like what you see? Snap up MPIGANAJI now, because there’s only one of them! This woven planter is genuinely one-of-a-kind: glorious blue, green, white and orange beading against woven doum palm and sisal. Each basket in this very special collection takes around thirty hours to complete.
The Basket Room is delighted to partner with the Ngurunit Weavers Group in Northern Kenya, a rural weaving cooperative who primarily practise subsistence farming: herding camels, goats and sheep. Today these baskets are sold as colourful planters and plant pots for the home, but they were originally created for collecting camel’s milk in.
Rendille basket weaving has become almost a forgotten art since the growth of mass-produced plastic and metal buckets, but the craft is being revived today. In buying from The Basket Room, you become an important part of our journey, supporting these talented weavers through fair trade. Each basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative: you can meet the ladies behind your planter HERE.
