MLANGO: Grey and White Woven Floor Runner

£ 155.00

Evocative of a stormy Kenyan sky or rain-dappled waters, this grey and white floor runners are woven from dip-dyed and tie-dyed sisal using a hand loom. Perfect for making your hallway unique and stylish.

The Basket Room collaborates with a weaver named Bernard on this project.  Bernard learned the complicated art of hand-loom weaving over twenty years ago and produces each one of these sisal mats by himself in his workshop – some taking up to four days to finish.

Sisal is a robust grass that grows wild in Kenya, and it’s often used for producing rope. Once picked, its leaves are split, rolled and dyed by hand before Bernard meticulously works them through the loom to create a fine, flat weave that feels lovely underfoot.

Bernard is a rare find. This type of weaving is very physical and complex work, so it’s difficult to come across weavers with the skills and experience necessary to produce our designs. Bernard’s mats and runners are pieces of a rare craft, and by bringing one home you become a guardian of this art whilst keeping Bernard in work.

Weaving isn’t Bernard’s main job, though: farming is his mainstay. But as drought proliferates across Kenya, mat weaving brings the opportunity to earn a fair and reliable wage through flexible work, which can be fitted in around other responsibilities and chores.

Material:  Sisal

It is advised to use a non-slip underlay if positioning the mat on a slippery surface (laminated or stripped floorboards and tiles).
