Check out the FIKA laundry basket - striking and bold in design it's one of a kind.
Meticulously crafted by only the most experienced and senior members of the women’s weaving cooperatives in the rural Eastern Region of Kenya, this bright and stylish laundry hamper is made from local sisal. The leaves of this indigenous grass undergo a lengthy process of harvesting, rolling and dyeing by hand before being expertly woven into a beautifully supple laundry basket for use all over the home. Each laundry basket takes forty balls of sisal to weave and six days to complete, whilst two artisan leather workers (known locally as ‘fundi’) work together to produce its supple leather trim and handles.
Durable enough for keeping logs and kindling by the wood burner and pretty enough for bedroom, bathroom or nursery storage, wherever in the home you place your woven laundry basket it will certainly make a statement!
To purchase one our woven laundry baskets is to become a vital part of our ongoing journey. We are proud to help provide an alternative means of income – basket weaving - to farming communities whose primary source of revenue is inconsistent and heavily reliant on rainfall.
