MBWEHA: Orange Wool and Sisal Tote Bag
This beautiful orange striped basket bag with a contrasting, dark blue base has been handwoven by a member of a family-run weaving co-operative in Eastern Region of Kenya. Use yours for gym sessions, summer beach jaunts and for popping to the shops.
The fine skills used to produce these sisal and yarn totes are passed from grandmothers to granddaughters. Each basket bag is a labour of love, taking up to six days to complete before cowhide straps are crafted and fitted at a local leather works.
The women in the weaving cooperative are largely farmers, dependent on the production of crops as a source of income. Drought brings a serious threat to agricultural families’ livelihoods, but weaving brings an alternative income for these women. Income from basket sales helps these women put food on the table, pay school fees and medical bills.
Basket weaving is a vital, income-generating craft form – one that you support directly when you become the owner of one of our unique basket bags. Want to know more about the talented team behind your basket bag? Meet the weavers here.
