Clean white and sunflower yellow bead work sit against the natural base of this wide woven basket. Woven by people of the Samburu and Rendille tribes from doum palm leaf with a decorative ridge of wild sisal, MATUNDA is a tribal mixture of tight, complex weaving and fine embellishment.
These wide, flat baskets make stylish fruit bowls and bread baskets, and they’re perfect for keeping jewellery, scarves and trinkets tidy on your dressing table. Traditionally used to collect camels’ milk thanks to their extremely tight woven design, these baskets almost disappeared when replaced by plastic and metal collection vessels. Over the past decade, however, palm leaf baskets woven in this traditional Rendille style have experienced a comeback, having found a place in the modern home as practical and aesthetic storage baskets.
Each palm leaf basket comes with a thank you card from its makers - Ngurunit Weavers Group in rural Northern Kenya - and you can meet the talented ladies behind your basket HERE. In purchasing one of our palm leaf baskets you become a fellow guardian of this endangered craft, supporting its ongoing revival and empowering the Kenyan weavers through fair trade.
