MAJDA: Handwoven Blue, Yellow and Black Wool Tote Bag

£ 69.00

A gorgeous sisal and yarn geometric bag with elaborate blue, yellow and black stripes and an intricate red design, MAJDA is hand woven by the Kamba tribe in Kenya. Make a bold statement on trips to the beach, the gym and the shops with this beautiful basket bag.

Originally woven by mothers as wedding gifts to their daughters, these African woven bags – also known as Kiondos - take exceptional skill and up to six days to complete. Two woollen strands are bound around a central base of durable sisal string in various complex patterns and sequences to create the MADJA, and the wool is sourced from upcycled woolly jumpers and synthetic yarns. The bags are then sent to a leading local leather works to be finished with cow hide shoulder straps.

Kiondo weaving was a diminishing craft in Kenya until very recently: in 2004 only four elders in the weaving cooperative had the experience to make them, but today there are around fifty active members reviving this precious craft.

To own one of our unique wool bags is to become a part of our journey: a finely woven tale of ethics, beauty and craftsmanship. We are proud to support the weavers in this truly fair trade, providing an additional source of income for farming families whose earnings can be unpredictable.

Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
