MAINZA: Decorative Woven Pot

Description
This beautiful, bulbous woven pot in earthy, natural tones was handwoven from palm tree leaf, foraged creeper vines and twigs in rural Zambia. Fill with decorative grasses and dried flowers, or equally let it simply stand alone. This woven pot will truly elevate any space it inhabits, from minimalist and modern homes to more rustic abodes.

When the Kariba Dam - a manmade dam on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe – was built in the 1970’s, many people were displaced. The government and other parties set about to support these displaced people by training people in traditional and profitable crafts such as basket weaving, blacksmithing and woodwork.

The groups who create these decorative woven pots are supported by such organisations, ensuring that they have the materials and the ongoing training to produce these placemats as well as ensuring that fair prices are paid. Basket weaving is a way of life in these communities; there is even a club at the local school dedicated to teaching youngsters this vital skill. You can meet the Zambian weavers
here.
