LUPOTE: Extra Large Brown & Natural Wall Basket: 61cm DIA
Woven from palm tree leaf, creeper vines and locally foraged twigs, this LUPOTE wall hanging baskets is totally unique. Use it with others to create a collection of decorative wall baskets or choose one to make a striking statement. A coiled rim, herringbone patterns, and geometric designs characterise this collection of woven baskets, but the specific pattern has been decided by the weaver herself, taking inspiration from her natural surroundings and working to her preferred designs.
When the Kariba Dam - a manmade dam on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe – was built in the 1970’s. many local people were displaced. The government and other parties sought to empower these displaced people by encouraging them to pursue and earn a living from traditional crafts such as basket weaving, blacksmithing and woodwork. You support traditional Zambian craft and rural Zambian communities when you purchase a unique handwoven MBI wall platter for your home.
African woven wall baskets are an enduring trend in sustainable interiors, bringing rich texture and a pop of interest to the home or office space. These wall platters are known across Africa as ‘winnowing baskets’ and are still widely used in weavers’ homes for decoration, for carrying grains and foodstuffs and for general home storage. Of all the basket designs produced by these weaving groups, these woven platters are perhaps the oldest and the most traditional. Weaving is a way of life in these communities; there is even a club in the local school dedicated to teaching basket weaving to youngsters.

HANDMADE IN ZAMBIA
We are delighted to be bringing beautiful Zambian basketry to The Basket Room, and thus connecting some incredible, rural craft collectives with conscientious customers all over the world. As part of our mission to discover and connect with the most talented craftspeople across Africa, Holly and Peris travelled to Zambia in 2019. Here they met and spent time with three different weaving groups who between them produce some of the woven wall baskets, decorative dancing baskets and handwoven place mats that we are now so pleased to be able to share with you.
Natural dyes are a key feature of this very special Zambian basketry, and the weavers we partner with are masters in achieving beautiful, earthy colours from blending rust, leaves and bark from specific indigenous trees in vats of boiling water.
Men and women both weave in Zambia, and the winnowing baskets that we sell as large wall platters are often used in many weavers’ homes, and for the careful work of separating rice and grain from chaff.
Our Zambian baskets are a celebration of the weavers’ natural home environment, woven from raw materials such as palm leaf, twigs and creeper vines. Some baskets are woven from the carefully stripped roots of certain trees, harvested in a sustainable way that means the tree is not damaged and the root can continue to grow and provide an ongoing source of weaving materials.
Weaving is a vital income source and a way of life for the people in these rural communities. Other means of income are blacksmithing and woodwork, fishing, growing rice and vegetables, and rearing livestock and poultry. People as young as the age of eighteen weave in these Zambian groups, and local schools even run weaving clubs so that youngsters can learn this precious craft and continue this age-old legacy for generations to come. To own one of these handwoven baskets is to become a guardian of this sustainable craft and a supporter of these Zambian weavers’ economic empowerment.

HANDWOVEN BASKET DISCLAIMER
All of our baskets are exquisitely handmade in remote rural corners of Africa using natural materials, one piece at a time, with no two baskets the same. Although every effort is made to create only the best product, there may be natural blemishes or bumps and curves in places, as well as patches of dirt that can be sometimes noticed on the recycled wool sisal mix baskets. These should not be misconstrued as flaws, but are what make each basket a handmade product, charming and unique.
In addition to this, as each basket is individually hand woven some variation in size and colour may occur. If you need a specific size please let us know prior to placing your order. By purchasing this product online, you agree with these disclaimers.
STORING YOUR BASKET
If your basket gets wet, simply leave it to dry naturally and re-shape. When not in use, we recommend storing somewhere completely dry and warm (and damp proof!)
As dyes are natural, colours may fade over time if basket is in direct sunlight.
Please be aware as the baskets are made of grass any areas in the home where there may be moisture in the air could cause your basket to grow mould.
When using our baskets as planters or to cover plastic pots, please ensure a plastic dish is used in the bottom to catch any excess water as the sisal may rot and dyes may run.

Returned products must be in the same condition as was received, complete with original swing tags and labels attached. Where possible, please include a note or brief reason for return. Unfortunately we can’t refund the cost of shipping and we do require you to pay for the postage of your returned items. Used or customer damaged items cannot be refunded or exchanged. We advise you to send this as recorded post, or keep a copy of proof of postage in the event that the package goes missing.
If your basket arrives with you damaged from the post on it's way out to you, and you would like to return it, we will of course be happy to reimburse for the item and the cost of shipping as long as you let us know about the damaged basket within 1 week of receiving your item/s.
