Expertly hand woven, the KUTA woven basket boasts diamond designs in pink and black on white, and a funnel-shaped lid. This bulbous and beautiful basket is fair trade and made from sustainably-sourced raffia and banana leaf stem. Use yours as a fabulous centrepiece on your shelves or table, or fill with jewellery, scarves - or even fruit or veg!
These beautiful lidded baskets have travelled from the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda on a journey of sustainable craft and ethical production. An all-female weaving group produces this collection, having formed in 2003 in the wake of the Allied Democratic Forces war of the 90’s which widowed many women and left countless families homeless. In 2003 this small collective decided to explore creative ways to better sustain themselves and their children and found that the traditional handicraft of basket weaving was the best way of earning a living. Today the group is over 100-women strong.
For many of these weavers, supplying baskets to The Basket Room is the difference between putting food on the table and relying on emergency relief. For this craft group to gain wider access to market – through increased basket orders from The Basket Room – means sustainable livelihoods and the growth of the Rwenzori economy.
