KUPAMBA: Red Beaded Doum Palm Leaf Bowl

£ 29.00 £ 69.00

Delicate red bead work brings Kenyan colour to this intricately woven, natural palm basket. KUPAMBA is a stunning addition to the dining room or kitchen table, being the perfect size and shape to hold fruit, bread, napkins or cutlery. This woven basket is equally handy for general household storage: a stylish way to keep keys, wallets and purses, remote controls or knick knacks in one place.

Woven from the blade of doum palm leaf with a ridge of wild sisal grass these beaded baskets are produced by a member of the Ngurunit Weavers Group in rural Northern Kenya. The pastoralists of Ngurunit - people of the Samburu and Rendille tribes - herd camels, goats, cattle and sheep for their living, and these beaded baskets follow a close weaving technique that would traditionally make these baskets tight enough to collect camels’ milk in. As plastic and metal containers have taken their place this type of milk basket almost disappeared altogether before seeing a revival in 2001 when they became sold at markets as practical, aesthetic homewares.

By taking home one of these beautiful palm baskets you become a fellow guardian of this rare craft, supporting its ongoing revival and empowering the weavers of Ngurunit through fair trade. Each palm leaf basket comes with a thank you card from the weaving group, and you can meet the skilful ladies behind your basket HERE.
