Unique, exquisite and hand woven in rural Kenya. There is only one KIKAPU: once it’s gone, it’s gone. This purple patterned basket has been woven by hand from hand-dyed, hand-stripped, hand-rolled sisal grass. Its creator? An experienced and highly creative female weaver in Kenya’s rural Coastal Region, exercising her artistic freedom to produce baskets in the patterns and colourways of her own choice.
Use your KIKAPU woven basket as a planter for homing your house plants and succulents, or if your desk is crying out for a splash of colour you could use this unique woven basket for storing stationery. Use yours on the dressing table for tidying away perfumes and jewellery, or pop yours on the bathroom shelf for hiding away toiletries and loo rolls. For more basket inspiration, see our uses page HERE.
The Basket Room works with a Community Based Organisation representing several women’s weaving cooperatives in this area of Kenya. Profits from sales and donations to the CBO are used only to offer support to these women’s groups. Working within a weaving cooperative provides these women with the opportunity to financially support themselves and their families through the dry seasons, since most weavers are subsistence farmers. Each basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative that made yours. Meet the weavers from this region HERE.
