KIFALME: Mellow Rose Wool and Sisal Tote Bag

With soft, dusky pink stripes and a pale yellow base, KIFALME is pretty as a picture in new neutral pastel hues. Handwoven over a period of six days by a weaving co-operative member in Eastern Region of Kenya, it’s the perfect companion for gym sessions, days on the beach and trips to the shops.

Drawing upon the skills of a highly-experienced weaving cooperative, these yarn and sisal basket bags are 100% Kenyan. Even the leather used to produce this basket bag’s shoulder straps is a by-product of the food industry – otherwise bound for landfill - making this woven tote a genuinely ethical fashion choice.

The women in this Kenyan weaving cooperative mainly come from farming families, heavily reliant on crop production for family income. During times of drought these families can struggle to produce enough harvest, so weaving has become an alternative income for these women and their families. Making baskets helps women earn a fair and flexible wage to help towards school fees and food and brings a huge sense of empowerment.
