With a bright fuchsia pink wave design on bright white, the KIBANDA summer tote bag is ideal for slinging over your shoulder and hitting the gym, the beach or the shops with.
Meticulously crafted by a member of the women’s weaving co-operative in the greater Lower Eastern region of Kenya – whose eldest weaver is ninety years old - each basket bag is woven from seven balls of hand-dyed sisal. Each basket bag takes around a week to complete depending on the preferred pace and chosen workload of its weaver. Basket weaving is a time-honoured and unhurried craft, done around housework and crop farming, visits to Church and trips to the river to collect water.
Once weaving is finished, our sisal bags are sent to a leather workshop in Kenya where leatherwork is added to the bags using cow hide sourced as a by-product of the food industry.
In producing our basket bags the women of the weaving cooperative are able support their families more sufficiently, raising the much-needed money to pay for school fees and to buy food with. During the dry seasons, farming communities often fail to produce enough harvest to meet their family’s basic needs. Basket weaving is a vital, income-generating craft form – one that you support directly when you become the owner of one of our beautiful basket bags.
Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
