Brand new for 2019, KASHA is an on-trend and totally unique wool bucket bag featuring an artistic pattern and bold pops of maroon, green and blue. Like what you see? Then snap her up now because when she’s gone, she’s gone!
With beautiful leather straps and a drawstring top closure with tassels, KASHA will bring a dash of Kenyan colour and craft to any occasion. Each of our woven bucket bags are made using yarn from recycled jumpers and designed personally by its weaver according to their own artistic flair.
Woven by a member of Kenya’s incredibly creative Kamba tribe – and working within the protection of a fair trade cooperative - these baskets are inspired by traditional Kenyan kiondo baskets, which were originally woven by mothers as wedding gifts to their daughters. Only recently a dying craft, today kiondo weaving is experiencing a revival thanks to a global shift towards more conscious consumerism.
Baskets take up to four days to weave, and weaving work normally takes place in lulls between farming, housework, childcare and social events. Basket weaving has become a vital source of additional income to these people, whose livelihoods otherwise depend on the unpredictable nature of agricultural work.
Once the four days of weaving work is done, these bucket bags are sent to a local tannery where soft, cow hide shoulder straps are produced and attached by artisan leather workers. KASHA’s metal bead rivets are made from recycled brass by artisans living in the Kawangare slums of Nairobi.
Each ethical basket bag is supplied with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative, and you can meet the weavers HERE.
