With its white and turquoise design, evocative of a breezy Kenyan sky, the HUNDI basket bag is a stylish accessory for holidays, beachy weekends and trips to the gym.
Beautifully crafted by a member of the weaving co-operative in the greater Lower Eastern region of Kenya from native sisal grass, each basket bag takes up to seven balls of hand-dyed sisal and a week to weave before it is sent to a leading leather workshop. Here, cow hide shoulder straps are produced and attached by highly skilled artisans.
The traditional weaving techniques used to create these oversized handbags are passed like gifts from grandmothers to mothers to granddaughters, empowering generations through craft and self-sufficiency. Weaving work is completed between daily domestic chores and crop farming duties, and our basket bags are usually carried around with the weavers throughout the week, ferried between church, the shops, and trips to collect river water.
During times of drought, farming communities often fail to produce enough harvest to pay for their family’s food and children’s school fees. Weaving our basket bags brings an additional, sustainable source of income for these women and their families. It is this vital craft form, and the empowerment of these women, that you are supporting when you purchase one of our sisal baskets.
Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
