Hand dyed and hand woven by a Batwa tribeswoman living in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, this basket’s exquisite oblongs of rust, yellow, brown and beige – all sourced from natural dyes - evoke the soothing colours of the Ugandan landscape.
This small ‘nyamuraza’ basket makes a beautiful planter or desk tidy and is totally unique: made once and sold once. All of the baskets in this collection are woven from local raffia palm and grasses found growing close to the weavers’ homes. Its dyes are naturally-sourced and hand-extracted, using a range of bark, root, vegetable and ash.
Thanks to support from local NGOs all proceeds from these basket sales go straight back to the makers and their communities, enabling mothers to support their families and pay school fees. These tribeswomen are taught traditional terrace farming techniques to grow the raffia palm and plants used to create the baskets’ earthy natural dyes.
To purchase this woven basket is to support the livelihoods of the Batwa people, whilst protecting their environment and promoting a sustainable trade for generations to come.
