Introducing FENA: a sisal and yarn basket bag hand woven by the Kamba tribe in Kenya. Mustard yellow, Sage green dusty blue and white geometric shapes create a distinctly tribal effect on this boho-inspired summer tote.
These exquisite basket bags were known originally as Kiondos (kee-yon/-doh) and were traditionally woven in rural Kenyan communities by mothers as unique wedding gifts for their daughters. Kiondo weaving was a declining craft in Kenya until very recently: in 2004 only four elders from this weaving cooperative had the fine skills and experience to make them, but today there are around fifty active members reviving this stunning craft which is typically passed down the female line.
The twining method used to create these wool bags involves two woollen strands bound around a central base of durable sisal string. The wool used to create these elaborate designs is sourced from a mixture of upcycled woolly jumpers and synthetic yarns, and each bag takes up to six days to complete. The bags are then sent to a leading local leather works to be finished, with the fitting of cow hide shoulder straps.
To take home one our wool bags is to become an important part of our journey: an intricately woven tale of generations of craftsmanship. We are proud to support the weavers in this truly fair trade, providing a sustainable source of income for farming communities whose primary income can be unreliable. Use your beautiful woven basket bag for trips to the beach, the gym and the shops.
Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
