Pink and turquoise stripes pop against a bright white base – the EKUNDU is a statement summer tote bag for beach trips, shopping, gym sessions and city travel.
Woven unhurriedly by a member of the weaving co-operative in the greater Lower Eastern region of Kenya from locally sourced sisal, each basket bag is a work of art and takes up to a week to complete. These longstanding weaving techniques are passed along like precious gifts from grandmothers to mothers to granddaughters, and weaving takes place between day-to-day household chores and agricultural duties. Our basket bags are carried around throughout the day with the weavers so that bits of weaving can be fitted in with the daily routine. Most of our beautiful African woven bags have therefore travelled to Church, to the river to draw water, to the shops and to community meet-ups before making their ultimate journey to you.
Once weaving is finished, our sisal bags are sent to a leather workshop in Kenya where leatherwork is added to the bags using cow hide sourced as a by-product of the food industry.
Each of our woven basket bags is a chapter in our story of beauty and ethics. In producing our basket bags the women of the weaving cooperative can better support their families, whose main income relies heavily on the production of crops. Weaving helps to pay for school fees and food, but also brings the gift of empowerment.
Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
