This pretty, dusky pink open-weave shopper bag is ideal for trips to the yoga studio, days on the beach and weekends away.
Hand woven in the Eastern Region of Kenya from sisal grass - often used for producing rope and twine - the leaves are harvested, rolled and dyed by hand in boiling water, all prior to weaving. Once the sisal is prepared and dyed, the DUKA shopper bag is expertly woven by a member of this small, all-female weaving cooperative of around 45 craftswomen.
Most of the weavers come from farming families, largely relying on unpredictable rainfall and an unreliable income to support their families on. Basket weaving has become a source of alternative income for these communities, helping families meet their basic living costs more comfortably. Each shopper bag comes with a thank you card from the cooperative that made your bag. Meet the weavers HERE.
