DUBULA: Black and Brown Zulu Art Basket
Description
Traditionally in South Africa, these bulb shaped, lidded baskets are known as ukhamba and used to store liquids like home-brewed beer. In your home, use your Zulu basket purely as a decorative statement basket or for keeping small items like jewellery safe and tidied away.
These fine, watertight baskets are woven from local ilala palm by women of the Zulu tribe in KwaZulu Natal. No two baskets are quite the same and the larger baskets in this small collection can take more than a month to hand-weave. The unique, geometric patterns on these bulbous, tightly woven baskets are created from natural dyes derived from roots, barks, aloe, berries, mud, and even boiled cow dung.
Farming is the main source of income for the Zulu women who produce these baskets, and weaving enables families to make a sustainable income during the arid seasons.
