Who’s for a picnic? The CHAKULA basket is ethically produced in Northern Ghana. Bright pink and green riot against a natural grass base on this ethically-produced work of art, handmade by weavers working within a flourishing Ghanaian cooperative. We search far and wide to discover the very best weaving cooperatives across Africa, and we’re delighted to be offering more work to these talented weavers as our collection expands to include these fabulous picnic baskets.
CHAKULA features a woven lid and carry handles – all produced using a robust local grass called veta vera which yields baskets of wonderful structural balance and durability. Grasses grow locally and are picked from the tip, allowing the root to continue to grow.
Most of the artisans who make these baskets are primarily farmers, but drought makes it increasingly difficult for families to make ends meet. Basket weaving empowers these people with the opportunity to earn a flexible second income. Want to know more about the Ghanaian weavers? Click here.
