With a buttery-yellow ombre design on a naturally dyed base, the BULUU is a beautiful summer tote bag for slinging over your shoulder and taking to the beach, the shops and the gym.
Woven by a member of the weaving co-operative in the greater Lower Eastern region of Kenya, each basket bag is made from seven balls of indigenous sisal twine and takes around one week to complete. There are around 250 members of this cooperative, with its oldest active member aged 90. Once weaving is finished, our sisal bags are sent to a leather workshop in Kenya where leatherwork is added to the bags using cow hide sourced as a by-product of the food industry.
The techniques of this age-old craft are passed along the generations, and basket weaving is done between domestic chores and crop farming, visits to Church and to the river to collect water. This is a precious and unhurried craft, performed with scrupulous attention to detail and infused with a sense of community spirit and family tradition.
In producing our basket bags the women of the weaving cooperative support their families who otherwise rely largely on the production of crops. Weaving generates the much-needed money to pay for school fees and food, but weaving also brings empowerment. It is this vital, income-generating craft form that you are supporting when you take one of our sisal baskets home.
Each basket bag comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here.
