Meet bold BILLIONI: a striking geometric basket hand woven by women working within several weaving cooperatives in Eastern Kenya and Nairobi. Bands of blue, red and yellow, creating a bohemian, tribal effect. These baskets are perfect as large planters, laundry baskets and hampers for shoes, toys, kindling, yoga gear or general clutter.
These intricate and colourful woven baskets are known traditionally as Kiondos (kee-yon/-doh) and were originally made by mothers as wedding gifts to their daughters. Kiondo weaving was a declining craft until recently, and even now there are only a few groups in Kenya keeping this form of basket weaving alive.
A twining method is used to create these African baskets: a process performed with two woollen elements bound around a central ‘stake’ of local sisal twine. The wool used to weave the exquisite patterns into these colourful baskets comes from upcycled jumpers, purchased from second hand clothes markets. Jumpers are taken home and washed, then the wool is unravelled into balls of separate colours. The weavers themselves decide which colours and patterns to use, enjoying full artistic license. Each woven basket takes up to four days to complete, and no two are exactly the same: your BILLIONI is unique!
To own one of our woollen baskets is to become an important part of our journey: a tale of sustainability and craftsmanship. We are proud to support the weavers, providing a sustainable source of income for farming communities whose primary income can be unreliable. Each ethical basket is supplied with a little information about the weaving cooperative, and you can meet the weavers HERE.
