Hand woven from raffia and banana leaf stem in a black and white diamond and cross design, the BARIDI basket was produced by one of a group of female weavers living in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda. Curvaceous and sturdy, this woven basket can be displayed as a striking decorative item, planter or used more practically for storing toiletries.
Some of the women in this weaving group were left widowed after the Allied Democratic Forces war of the 90’s, and others were left homeless. In 2003 they found that the traditional handicraft of basket weaving was the best way of earning a living, and now the founding group of six women numbers over one hundred weavers.
For this craft group to gain wider access to market – through increased basket orders from The Basket Room – means sustainable livelihoods and the growth of the Rwenzori economy.
