Meet beautiful BAHARI: a peacock-blue open-weave shopper bag whose deep hues are reminiscent of the Indian Ocean, or a Kenyan sky at twilight. These intricate hand woven bags are great for weekends away, for taking to the gym or for filling with produce at the market.
Hand woven in the Eastern Region of Kenya from sisal grass – a robust shrub often used for producing rope and twine - the leaves are harvested, rolled and dyed in boiling water before being hung to dry. Only once all of these tasks are performed by hand can the weaving begin, carried out by a skilled member of this small, all-female weaving cooperative of around 45 craftswomen.
These weavers are the lifeblood of The Basket Room - talented artisans whose primary source of income is farming. Basket weaving - one of the oldest crafts known to man - has become a source of alternative income for these communities whose revenue can be unpredictable. Working within a cooperative which practises fair trade principles enables weavers to supplement their family income with flexible, reliable and fairly-paid work. Each woven shopper bag comes with a thank you card from the cooperative that made your bag. Meet the weavers HERE.
