ATEBUBU: Vegan Baby Changing Basket with Plain Handles
We’re delighted to announce the arrival of ATEBUBU - our beautiful handwoven baby changing basket, ethically and carefully produced by our partner co-operative in Northern Ghana.
Choose to accessorise your basket with an array of essentials for your newborns ultimate comfort. Combine a foam mattress and cotton sheet or choose to upgrade to a natural coconut coir and wool mattress (made from hundreds of coconut fibres and recommended for newborn babies) and organic cotton sheet. Or make a statement and buy the basket alone to feature as a gorgeous tabletop tray! ATEBUBU features plain woven carry handles rather leather wrapped making this a vegan friendly basket.
These ethical nursery accessories make the perfect eco baby gift and will transform any chest of drawers or floor space into a stylish changing area for your little one. Once the days of nappy changing are behind you, this flat woven basket can be put to use all over the home and nursery – a truly practical keepsake.
The majority of the weavers who produce these baby baskets are men, having been taught the age-old art of basket weaving from their own mothers and fathers. Agricultural work is the mainstay of most weavers’ family incomes, but poor rainfall and drought makes life extremely challenging. Basket weaving, and producing these exquisite woven baskets, brings women and men the opportunity to earn a valuable second income.
Each changing basket takes around three days to weave, using a grass called veta vera (also known as ‘elephant grass’) which grows wild in Ghana and is remarkably sturdy when woven.

HANDMADE IN GHANA
Our Ghanaian woven baskets are a celebration of Northern Ghana’s abundant natural raw material, and the age-old weaving skills of its people: sustainable style and ethical production, through and through. In our ongoing commitment to fair trade, our baskets are produced from natural materials indigenous to the region they are woven in.
Home of the hardy veta vera grass, Ghana is where our collections of sturdier, stiffer baskets are made: woven bike baskets, square, rectangular and circular storage baskets, bolga shopping baskets, dog baskets and baby Moses baskets. Where Kenyan sisal grass creates supple and pliable baskets and bags, Ghanaian veta vera grass produces more structured baskets. We partner with 24 weaving cooperatives and over 1000 weavers in Ghana, both male and female. This portable and flexible craft means that weavers can take their work home with them if preferred, completing their weaving around other household tasks and duties to create truly fair trade baskets. Bicycle baskets and storage baskets generally take around three days to complete, and the process – as you will see from the pictures – is meticulous.
"We wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to the customers who buy our baskets, which create employment for our women in Ghana. We say thank you and we wish to continue to do business with you next year." - Asabila, Cooperative Manager – Ghana
