Introduce some soothing blues to the home with the ANGA range of colour blocked baskets, hand woven in three useful sizes. These African coloured baskets are woven by a small Kenyan weaving cooperative of around forty members, with a dye manager dedicated to maintaining colour quality and consistency. Sisal grass is sourced ready-rolled when regular orders for these baskets come in from The Basket Room, and this local twine is hand-dyed in large vats of boiling water. Once dyed, the sisal is hung out to dry before a traditional twining method is used to create each basket. This weaving group is a highly skilled collective of women who have practised this meticulous art from a young age, having been taught by mothers and grandmothers.
Backing all the values of fair trade, our work with weaving cooperatives empowers women to support their families with a flexible income in the dry seasons, where subsistence farming often fails to meet the needs of the family. When you take home one of our woven baskets you actively support these weavers and their families, supporting our commitment to dignified working conditions. Each beautifully woven basket is supplied with a thank you card from the weaving cooperative, and you can meet these weavers right HERE.
