Woven wall baskets and wall platters are the newest trends in ethical décor, bringing texture to the interior space in the form of beautiful natural fibers in shades of brown. Striking hung alone on a wall and stunning displayed in a group, these shallow baskets also make for practical tableware.

Every Tonga wall basket is different to the rest, handwoven from ilala palm and hand dyed using tree barks by cooperative members in the rural Binga District of Zimbabwe. Binga is one of Zimbabwe’s best-known basket weaving communities and home to the displaced baTonga people.

A coiled rim, herringbone patterns, and geometric designs characterize this collection, but the specific pattern has been decided by the weaver herself, taking inspiration from her natural surroundings. These bowls were traditionally (and are still) used by the baTonga people for winnowing grains.  These traditional baskets are woven using the’ over and under’ style, and a larger size wall basket can take around three days to complete.

Purchasing a Tonga wall platter is an act of support for this weaving community, enabling many women to send their children to school for the first time.
