Hand woven from local raffia palm and grasses grown on the outskirts of the Bwindi National Park, this dark green, beige, purple and orange basket is one-of-a-kind. Its sturdiness and depth makes for a gorgeous planter or flower pot, and its rich, earthy hues – from natural dyes - will bring a dash of Ugandan style to any desk, bedside or dressing table.
This ‘nyamuraza’ basket’s multi-coloured shapes are inspired by the rolling terraced hills of the Bwindi region. Pounded roots produce the range of yellows, whilst fresh bark is ground to create the basket’s orange tones. The ishigwa vegetable yields dark green, and greys and purples are made with ash.
All proceeds from the sales of these unique baskets go straight back to the weavers, helping mothers to provide for their families and pay school fees. To purchase one of these baskets is to support this ethical, sustainable trade, and a craft that can be passed on to future generations of Batwa people.
