AKAN: Rectangular Turquoise Bike Basket

£ 69.00

The AKAN bicycle basket boasts a wide turquoise stripe around its rim: a bright splash of Ghanaian colour against a natural grass background. This rectangular front basket upgrades any bicycle in an instant, having been designed in-house by The Basket Room and hand-woven in Northern Ghana.

Load up the AKAN with sandwiches and a good book before setting off on an adventure for the day, or use it for taking your trainers, kit and water bottle to the gym. This bike basket is spacious enough for textbooks and stationery, and can be attached to the bicycle rear if preferred, as a stylish pannier. This woven bicycle basket can also be used to store books and nursery toys when attached to cot rails, can hold toiletries and towels on a bathroom rail – and will hide away all manner of odds and ends if fastened to bannister rails. Each bike basket takes up to three days to weave by hand, and is made from wild veta vera – also known as Elephant Grass. This indigenous grass is harvested, split, hand-rolled and dyed before a skilled weaver from our partner weaving cooperative in Northern Ghana sets to work.

Most of the weavers in the Northern Ghana cooperative are agricultural workers first and foremost, though relying on a season’s rainfall makes for unpredictable earnings. Basket weaving – one of the oldest crafts known to man – has become a source of alternative income for these communities in the dry seasons, helping families to meet their basic living costs more comfortably. To purchase one our woven baskets is to become an important part of our journey: supporting the weavers in a truly fair and sustainable trade.

Each bicycle basket comes with a thank you card from the weaving co-operative that made yours. Want to know more about the people behind the baskets? Meet the weavers here
