Eastern Region Kenya: Sisal Baskets
The women in these villages hand weave baskets using traditional techniques, that have been passed down through generations from Grandmother to Granddaughter. The villagers live as farming communities, whom rely heavily on the production of their crops as a source of income, but during times of drought they struggle to produce the harvest they need to survive.
The women, during the scarce rains, turn to the art of weaving in order to provide an alternative income for their families. Not only does it give the women important empowerment but also brings in money to pay for school fees and food.
It is this age-old tradition that we at The Basket Room are helping to protect, whilst also supporting the women in this vital, income generating craft form.
